Although the French popularised the sleigh bed, the original design was influenced by the ancient Egyptians. It’s rumoured that Napoleon Bonaparte took a liking to the sleigh beds (or “lit bateau”) he found in the exotic Egyptian palaces, and then brought the look back home to France, where it became part of the famous Empire style.

The Deauville is a low-line sleigh bed. This gives a lighter, slightly more contemporary edge to a bed style that has been popular for hundreds of years.
